"Public speaking and agility ladders"
It was great to see the students eager to get back to the swing of things after two weeks off! For our turf session on Monday I introduced them to agility ladders for the first time this year. Some students have experience with these from their other sports, and for others it was their first try. Agility ladders are great as both an agility exercise, and also a warm-up, so now that we've tried them they will definitely be coming out more often. In the board room that day we started a new anatomy unit; The Muscular System.
During nutrition class on Tuesday we started watching the movie Food Inc. (a documentary discussing the ethical and moral issues related to our food supply). It opened up a lot of discussion surrounding how our food choices affect the production and distribution of food, and I'm eager to keep watching to hear more about what the students think.
On Wednesday we had a great time practicing our public speaking. For a warm-up, we did a group exercise that pushed everyone past their comfort zones. The objective was to go around in a circle and tell a story as a group, one at a time. The next activity we did was more of an individual activity. Instead of focussing on the content of the speech, the students were asked to say the alphabet as if that was their speech. It was great to see students feeling more comfortable talking in front of their peers (even if it was just the alphabet!).
"ABC! DE. FG? HIJKL. MNOP! QRS. T. UV. WXY? Z."
We also watched a great TED talk by Lars Sudmann that focussed on the key elements of public speaking:
