"Capture the Flag/Yukon Basketball Championships"
It's been a busy week here for LEAD! For our Monday turf session we tried a new warm-up, and went through some basic agility exercises. It is clear that they are becoming more and more confident as the sessions roll on. Even though we only had half our class (students were away for various reasons) we were able to play a quick game of Capture the Flag, as it requires the students to be both quick and agile. Also, the progress in the wellness room is evident, and we are now scheduled in there every Tuesday and Wednesday.
For our leadership component this week, the students decided they wanted to volunteer for scorekeeper/timekeeper/shot clock duties for the Yukon Basketball Championships. They were fantastic considering most had never done it before! During our Wednesday classroom session we practiced our "active listening" skills in class with role-playing and discussions.
On Friday, the students were introduced to their Arctic Sports/Dene games component of the course. We spent the entire time in the Flexihall and attempted the Alaskan High-Kick, the Kneel Jump, the One-Hand-Reach, the one foot high kick and the two foot high kick (just to name a few...). Needless to say, it was awesome, and I'm extremely excited for the upcoming sessions. With how busy the week was, five students still had the energy to volunteer to help Sport Yukon move boxes of Arctic Winter Games uniforms after school that day. Overall, it was a fantastic week!
