PCSS LEAD: Hockey Canada SKills Academy
Grade 8
Course Information:
The PCSS LEAD (Leadership Education and Athlete Development) Hockey Canada Skills Academy Program is a course that offers students a formal hockey and leadership training program within the academic setting to allow for achievement and excellence in sport education. It is not designed to establish or develop teams for competition. It will take place in the second semester, and is for the full afternoon.
Objectives:
· To engage learners in stimulating and inspiring educational leadership experiences through hockey
· To present students the opportunity to gain coaching and officiating certifications
· To improve students' skill and fitness through a variety of activities in the gym/weight room/field
· To improve students' knowledge of the game through classroom sessions
· To provide sport science instruction of fitness, sports nutrition, and leadership
The PCSS LEAD Hockey Program is intended to help students gain self-confidence through success in sport, specifically hockey, and take pride in their ability to meet or exceed societal standards for performance. It is an extension of the current PCSS physical education and parent LEAD programs. PCSS LEAD hockey will provide students the opportunity to learn fundamental techniques of hockey, as well as the basic components of active living, wellness and leadership to contribute to a healthy, active lifestyle. It is designed for students who want to improve their current skills and knowledge, or students that simply want to learn and enjoy playing the game.
Eligibility:
Students in Grades 8 are eligible. Space is limited. Once the class is filled, a waiting list will be populated. The course fee is $150, and it is recommended that students provide their own equipment.
Typical Weekly Schedule:
Monday - Ice 1:00-2:15
Tuesday - @ PCSS (Off-Ice programming)
Wednesday - Ice 1:00-2:15
Thursday - @ PCSS Floorball/Strength and Conditioning
Friday - Ice 1:00-2:15
